Mitzi M. Montoya

As a girl, Mitzi asked her parents if she could get a car when she turned sixteen. They agreed, with a caveat: Mitzi would have to work for it and build it herself – a tradition she’s continued with her 2 boys. At sixteen, with a 1964 ½ Mustang Fastback complete, Mitzi launched into a lifelong pursuit of making. Today, Mitzi Montoya is focused on making a new higher education experience – one that emphasizes learning through making things and solving real-world challenges through collaboration. As Vice Provost and Dean of the College of Technology & Innovation at Arizona State University, Mitzi’s vision for CTI is to create a new model for teaching and learning. CTI focuses on “majoring in making,” emphasizing practice alongside theory. Mitzi believes that this model will be the new norm in preparing students for twenty-first century jobs in STEM fields in particular.
